These promotions may be based on inaccurate information related to eligibility and credit calculation. In addition, some of these ads exist solely to collect personally identifiable information from the taxpayer in exchange for false promises. Scammers then use the information to carry out identity theft.

  • Phishing and smishing: Be alert to false communications from those impersonating legitimate organizations in the tax and financial community, including the IRS and states.
